Alstom has signed a contract worth approximately 30 million euros with Companhia de Geração Térmica de Energia Elétrica (CGTEE) for the retrofit of units 3 and 4 of the Presidente Médici III power plant near Candiota city, Brazil.
Alstom’s scope of contract, signed on 1st September 2009, involves the design, manufacture, dismantlement and erection of upgraded components at the boilers of the two 160 MW units. The plant modifications will be implemented in the first half of 2011.
In 2008 Alstom had undertaken a plant survey and made recommendations to CGTEE on how to improve plant availability and restore plant output. Alstom is the original manufacturer of the boilers, which first entered into operation in 1986.The award of this contract is a further opportunity for the two companies to continue their long standing partnership.
The rehabilitation of the two boilers at Presidente Médici will promote the use of Brazilian coal as a back-up energy source for the national power grid. Brazil generates more that three quarters of its electricity from hydropower however low rainfall in 2001 triggered a national energy review of the need for reserve capacity of electricity generation. The improvements to the units 3 and 4 of the Presidente Medici III power plant support the promotion of alternative fuel sources to fill potential power generation shortages.
Alstom has supplied equipment for over 50% of Brazil’s installed base and is a leader in the country’s hydropower industry. Over the past ten years, Alstom has supplied over 100 turbines and generators to energy projects in Brazil.
